Children's Health
Children's Health
Expert paediatric care from newborns to teens — covering development checks, vaccinations, skin conditions, and everything in between. We know a visit to the doctor can feel daunting for little ones (and parents). We take our time, explain everything, and never rush.
If your child is seriously unwell, struggling to breathe, or unresponsive, call 999 immediately. For urgent advice about a sick child, contact NHS 111 or visit your nearest A&E.

Quick answer
A private paediatric consultation gives your child a 30-minute appointment with a GP experienced in children’s health, with no NHS wait. Children are seen for illness, developmental concerns, and ongoing conditions. From £110.

Consent, parental responsibility & Gillick competence
We are committed to obtaining valid consent before every examination or treatment. The rules around consent for children are nuanced — here is what you need to know before attending.
Parental consent
For children under 16, a parent or person with parental responsibility must give consent for examination and treatment. 'Parental responsibility' is a legal term defined under the Children Act 1989 and includes the birth mother, a father named on the birth certificate (after December 2003), and anyone with a Parental Responsibility Order or who is the child's legal guardian. We will ask you to confirm your relationship to the child at the time of booking and at the appointment. If you are unsure whether you hold parental responsibility, please contact us before attending.
Who should attend
A parent or person with parental responsibility must be present for all appointments involving children under 16. For young people aged 16–17, the young person may attend alone and give their own consent under the Family Law Reform Act 1969, though we welcome parental involvement where the young person agrees. For younger children, we ask that you bring any relevant medical records, red book (Personal Child Health Record), and a list of any current medications.
Gillick competence and Fraser guidelines
Following the House of Lords ruling in Gillick v West Norfolk and Wisbech Area Health Authority [1986] AC 112, a child under 16 may consent to medical treatment independently if they have sufficient understanding and maturity to fully understand the nature and implications of the proposed treatment. Our clinicians assess Gillick competence on an individual basis for each clinical decision. The Fraser guidelines — a practical application of the Gillick ruling most commonly applied to contraceptive and sexual health matters — provide a framework for assessing whether it is appropriate to proceed without parental involvement. In all cases, we will encourage children to involve their parents wherever possible and safe to do so.
Confidentiality for young people
Young people who are assessed as Gillick competent have the same right to confidentiality as adult patients. We will not disclose information about their care to a parent without their consent, unless there is a safeguarding concern that overrides the duty of confidentiality. We will always discuss the limits of confidentiality openly with young patients at the start of their consultation.
Refusing consent
In limited circumstances, a child who has been found Gillick competent may refuse treatment. However, parental or court authority may override a competent child's refusal where the treatment is judged to be in their best interests. Similarly, parents cannot consent to treatment that is clearly against the child's interests. Where there is any disagreement about consent, we will seek legal and ethical guidance promptly and always prioritise the child's welfare.
For more on how we protect children and young people, see our Safeguarding Policy. If you have any questions about consent before your appointment, please call us on 01676 545111.
