Back Pain

Expert assessment, diagnosis, and treatment for acute and chronic back pain.

Back pain is one of the most common reasons people visit a GP or physiotherapist. It can range from a dull, constant ache to a sudden, sharp pain that makes movement difficult. Most back pain improves within a few weeks with the right treatment, but persistent or severe pain needs proper assessment to rule out serious causes and build an effective recovery plan.

Common symptoms

  • Persistent ache or stiffness anywhere along the spine
  • Sharp, localised pain in the lower back or neck
  • Pain that radiates down the leg (sciatica)
  • Difficulty standing straight or walking
  • Muscle spasms or tightness
  • Pain that worsens with sitting, bending, or lifting

When to see a doctor

If your back pain persists for more than two weeks, is getting worse, or is accompanied by numbness, tingling in the legs, or bladder/bowel changes, you should seek medical assessment promptly. Sudden severe back pain after a fall or injury also needs urgent evaluation.

How we help at AtWell

Our approach is thorough: a GP consultation to diagnose the cause, followed by physiotherapy to treat it. Our physiotherapists use hands-on manual therapy, targeted exercises, and postural correction. For persistent cases, we can arrange imaging, specialist referrals, or pain management injections.
