High Cholesterol

Blood testing, risk assessment, and management for high cholesterol.

High cholesterol rarely causes noticeable symptoms, but it significantly increases your risk of heart attack and stroke. A simple blood test can measure your levels, and lifestyle changes or medication can bring them under control. Knowing your cholesterol is one of the most important things you can do for your long-term health.

Common symptoms

  • High cholesterol usually has no symptoms
  • May be discovered through routine blood testing
  • Family history of high cholesterol or heart disease
  • Yellowish deposits around the eyes (xanthelasma)
  • Associated with being overweight, sedentary, or having a high-fat diet
  • More common with age, particularly after 40

When to see a doctor

Adults over 40 should have their cholesterol checked at least every five years, and sooner if there is a family history of heart disease or high cholesterol. If you have not had yours checked recently, a private blood test gives you a clear picture within 24–48 hours.

How we help at AtWell

We offer a comprehensive lipid panel as part of a blood test or health assessment. Your GP will explain the results in plain language, assess your overall cardiovascular risk, and discuss options — from dietary changes and exercise to statin prescriptions where appropriate.
